Thoughts:
I am glad I looked at this book. It gave me some ideas of how to do my own multi-day walk without worrying how to backpack it. Some things I would need to consider would be:
• Make sure my lodging is a days distance from a previous night’s stay
• Make sure the route I select is walker friendly
• What will the food arrangements be
• Consider the transportation to and from the start and end points
• Lastly, consider what the points of interest will be.
Evaluation:
I did not “finish” this book. It is not the type of book which you read cover to cover, rather one which you use as a reference book. I did get what I wanted from the book: an idea of how to organize a multi-day walking trip. For that, this book is a good way to begin planning that kind of journey.
Tom Courtney has 13 walks laid out throughout Northern California. These are multi-day hikes where you will find yourself at lodging at the end of each day. Each walk has:
- introduction,
- detailed itinerary-broken day by each day of the trip
- overview of the route with alternatives
- transportation options-not all of the walks are loops
- maps needed
- places to stay.
The problem with following this book, and many other guide books, is that I am not Tom Courtney, At one time, I would think a bit about putting in a 15 mile day and just plan to do it. I no longer would plan in that way. On the other hand, with the insights Courtney gives, I should be able to plan my own trips.
By the way, I do not consider a 3 rating as bad, rather this is not a book which caused my thoughts to expand.
